Icon Art
The word Icon is a Greek word meaning image.
For our art we chose St. Nicholas as we were learning about the life and story of this saint in history. This form of artwork is called iconography and the artist is called an iconographer. Iconographers do not sign their work as they believe it to be the work of the Holy Spirit.
We painted on a panel of wood using the colours of red, gold, brown and white. The wood is chosen as it symbolizes the cross that Jesus died on and his resurrection. Gold symbolises light and holiness. Red represents royalty and Brown for earthiness and humility. White represents wisdom. As we look closely into the icon, our spiritual side becomes more present. Icons bring spirituality, prayer and deeper meaning to people.
